In a recent winter driving demo, the team at Smail Acura took the 2026 Acura MDX SH-AWD out for a test in over a foot of fresh snow, thanks to snowstorm Fern. The goal: to see just how much of a difference Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) makes when the weather turns tough.
It’s all about torque vectoring. While standard AWD splits power front-to-back, Acura’s SH-AWD system takes things a step further by actively distributing power between individual wheels. If a tire starts to slip, the computer slows or accelerates particular wheels to regain traction and keep the driver in control. As Speaker B puts it, “you’re in control the whole time.”
During the demo in a snowy parking lot, even climbing a slippery hill was a breeze for the MDX. SH-AWD’s ability to send power to the wheel with the most grip means you don’t have to floor the accelerator or worry about slipping sideways—perfect for icy, unpredictable surfaces. The MDX also comes with a dedicated Snow mode, making it even easier to avoid wheel spin by limiting acceleration and optimizing traction.
The team even covers the traction control system, explaining how drivers can manually turn it off in tricky spots where a bit of wheel spin helps chew through deep snow. With a quick press behind the steering wheel, vehicle stability assist can be switched off to suit the situation.
